NJCU's Barrino six pairs of sneaks leading resurgent Knights

New Jersey City University senior Da'Shon Barrino is in love with more than just the game of basketball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He likes to look good doing it too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Since coming to NJCU earlier this year, Barrino has become a mainstay in Marc Brown's frontcourt, as one of the Gothic Knights Tri-Captains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and starting shooting guard. However, aside from all the statistics, what is most interesting about Barrino is a little superstition he has: he likes to wear a different pair of sneakers for every game.
Unlike a lot of his teammates who have one or two pairs of sneakers to wear on game days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Barrino has six different pairs of sneakers that he brings with him to each game.
Barrino has a tradition of sitting at his locker, staring at the sneakers and then deciding which one will help him during the game. He has worn every pair at least twice this year.
"It's something that started my freshman year; I am a big fan of sneakers. My philosophy is, if you look good, you'll play good."
His teammates, and the NJCU Athletic Department took notice early in the season during the third game of the year against Rutgers Newark,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when Barrino came out with different sneakers compared to the pair he had worn a week earlier. Throughout the Gothic Knights four game home stand, the point guard wore a different shoe every night.
"I play in a different pair in every game," Barrino said with a laugh. "Everyone wonders what I am going to have on my feet. Before the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I look at the shoes and that's when I decide what to wear."
Of his six pairs of sneakers, his favorite pairs are a purple Kobe Bryant sneaker and a green Kevin Garnett sneaker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both from Nike.
Barrino admits that he doesn't have a set rotation for his shoes and has worn a different sneaker in each of the Gothic Knights current five game-winning streak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a trend he wants to continue.
"Whatever works," coach Brown said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "As long as he's out there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it doesn't matter what shoe he wears."
Personally, Barrino has seen his collegiate career come full circle.
A native of Newark, who went to Malcom X. Shabazz High School, Barrino finally returned home in his last year of eligibility for collegiate basketball at New Jersey City University, a school he wanted to go when he was a freshman.
Instead Barrino started his college career at a small junior college in Texas called Jacksonville College, before transferring to Lander University in Atlanta,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where he spent the 2009-2010 academic year.
"Before I went to Lander University in Atlanta, I met with the coaches (from NJCU) and I thought about coming here. Things didn't go right in Atlanta for me, so I wanted to come home. It has been a great experience for my family, since I get to play in front of them. There is no place like home."
Added coach Brown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "I'm glad he's here. He reminds me of myself; he works hard, plays hard and is very coachable. This is the most talented team we've had."
Barrino leads the team in field goals made, 70, and three pointers made, 15. He also leads the Gothic Knights in free throw shooting 83 % (43 for 82), and is second on the team in points scored,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 202, assists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 48, and steals 39.
He admits that getting adjusted to his new teammates took most of preseason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but once the regular season began in November, he quickly jelled with his teammates.
Even though he is arguably the Knights top player,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Barrrino has a lot of admiration for his fellow Gothic Knights. "Everyone wants to see each other do well. I want to see the other kids score, and rebound,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because that means good things are possible for us."
Currently the Knights have won five in a row to improve to 12-8 and are in third place in the NJAC Northern Division. In a league that only allows six teams to make NJAC Tournament,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Barrino knows the Knights have to keep winning.
"Coming into the winning streak we were in a tough situation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Barrino said. "We are in a position where we have to take it one game at a time. Our defense will be our key; that's something we focus on; if we stop the other guys, we have a shot to win." Barrino added he wants to taste that championship soon. "That would mean a lot to me."
