A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MACMILLAN INTERN
This is my first time living in New York,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I think I in love with this place. Hard not to be,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], right? I live with two actor/bartenders in a very small apartment in the East Village. It more like a dollhouse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I do have my own room and the view from the roof is absolutely incredible. The best part is that I only a twenty-minute walk from Macmillan. My workday usually starts at the fruit cart outside the Flatiron. (It only thirty-five cents for a banana! Whaaat?)
I an intern for the marketing department,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is great. I been spending most of my time in institutional marketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which focuses on schools and libraries. My first project was to organize the feedback that we get from teachers and librarians across the country into a mammoth spreadsheet. I also help gather and sort book reviews from teachers and librarians so that they can be given to our editors. Another typical task is to check what books of ours appear on summer reading lists across the country or receive awards and honors. I also written press releases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which means I been published by Macmillan of.
I also get the pleasure of working with other departments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which allows me to explore the building and use terrifying office tools like the paper cutter. (Note to friendly design department guy: please do not surprise me by shouting my name as you walk by when my fingers are near the blade; I prefer a more traditional manicure.)
At lunchtime,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can usually (ok,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], always) be found having a panini at the tea shop downstairs. It safe to say that I hooked. On Wednesdays though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of the Macmillan interns gather to eat pizza nom nom learn about publishing from the real folks who work here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the (yes what we call you.)
I worked with the advertising and promotion department,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], put together ads for books,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and pulled together elements for our upcoming catalogs. One of my more creative tasks was to write word games for a very clever book about puns.
While I am not part of the coffee culture,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can frequently be found getting hot chocolate at the machine on my floor. Can someone explain to me why getting hot chocolate makes so much noise? Maybe everyone drinks coffee because it quieter. Perhaps it all part of a conspiracy to keep the work force caffeinated. I investigate this and get back to you.
I having a blast at Macmillan. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I always excited to work on something new. What an industry. It amazing to me that I allowed and encouraged to read galleys of so many fabulous books. I may or may not be hoarding them.
After my time this summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I decided that I definitely want to work in publishing. It that or be a pony.
Either way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I going to need a bigger apartment.
