With the plethora of movie sequels this summer we have been treated to plenty of franchise videogames. Some of them are like Spiderman 3, or Pirates of the Caribbean,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but you should not forget about Shrek the Third. Each of the movies has their childish qualities and that is obviously passed over into the games as well. Some are a little more adult than others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they also retain a bit of childish flavour so that they can be enjoyed by any age. I can say that I enjoyed the Spiderman 3 game because while it was a little light on the action side it was still a solid game. Can that be true for the Shrek the Third though? They do have similar qualities.
With Shrek the Third they have done the opposite when it comes to action. They have increased the amount of fighting you will need to go through, but at the same time they have shrunk the size of the world. They also have included platforming elements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while including minor collection quests as well. In short it is an action platformer with collection quests directly following the path of the movie. Like the movie the game has Shrek searching for an alternative king to take over his newly acquired kingdom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mainly so that he will not have to lead the people. Of course there is only one person that can hold the position, and that is a teenage named Arthur. But while Shrek is away from home Prince Charming teams up with a few other villains to take over the Kingdom.
Moving from the storyline of the game to the guts, the action part of the game is much like a button masher. Even as you rotate through the cast of characters -- for the most part -- you will simply be hitting the main attack button. Of course you also have the option of using the block attack, which works pretty well at saving your life on the top difficulty level. There is also a special attack button unique to each character, which can launch some enemies into the air,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or set up a separate combo attack. With Shrek after you knock someone into the air you may also catch him or her for a few extra points.
There are also fairy dust attacks that are different for each of the characters. You gain fairy powers by either picking up fairy power from defeated enemies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], breaking boxes and other things, or eating up food from those broken boxes. The game also provides the occasional fairy to consume if you want to fill you entire bar. There are three major levels that you may fill up on the fairy dust meter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and each time you use the fairy power you consume one of the bars. The ogres also have the ability to use up all three filled bars at a time, which gives them the ability to slow down time which helps them cause a world of hurt to their enemies. The game will also force characters to use the powers on certain levels so that they can advance through minor puzzles, but overall you can generally just ignore using fairy dust attacks.
To advance through the game you will need to mix regular attacks with jumps mainly so that you are able to navigate the multi-layered levels. Sometimes you will need to jump over a few platforms, and other times you will need to defeat all the enemies in the area. Oddly enough some areas require you to collect specific items like shoes before progressing. Yes I did say shoes. This aspect of the game was very mundane, which is quite annoying to say the least. What could have saved the game would be nice and easy achievements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not all of them are.
Something that helps the game out is a castle siege mini-game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has you attack a separate castle with a giant crossbow and a catapult. Using the left analog stick you will line up your shot, while pressing the A button you will set the power-level,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which will affect how far it travels. In the game there are set targets that must be knocked down, and most of them only require a single perfectly placed shot to destroy them. It was a fun mini-game but I would have loved to see it in action a bit more with a lot more depth.
Graphically the game is decent at best. The characters look like they do in the movie but the landscape is fairly dull. The camera angles used are on a set rail, which can make it difficult when you need to search some of the corners while looking for collectables. Perhaps the worst thing about the graphics was that the game occasionally skipped action frames and this occurred with only two or three characters on the screen at a time. It was noticeable when the main character Shrek was attacking, and since they were the person you were playing it happened quite a bit. For sound I expect a lot out of the game because it seemed that a cartoon movie game should have had all the actors ready for their parts, but it did not sound like Antonio Banderas voiced Puss In Boots. There were also a few other questionable comments made by characters that did not sound like their movie counterparts. Overall I am fairly disappointed in both of these areas because they did not live up their franchise counterparts.
In the end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the game is decent at best. There were a few fun moments with the castle siege,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but everything else was a wash. I would have loved to see easier achievements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or even ones that were a bit more creative than just needing to collect a certain amount of items. For the most part adults can just pass on this game, but their kids may be attracted to it for at least a rental. I was hoping for a bit more of the adult humour squeezed in there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that was not the case. Also. Most of everything that was said could also be applied to the Wii version,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which I played for a few hours as well.
