Hundreds fail to identify cod in Salford University taste test to highlight declining fish stocks
Cod has taken a battering in a blindfold taste test by boffins. Marine biologist Stefano Mariani challenged 200 people to identify cod - Britain's favourite fish - in the test,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Salford University expert found that only one in six diners were able to taste or recognise the fish - and that many actually preferred hake instead.
The wildlife expert challenged visitors at the Manchester Science Festival to identify four species of battered fish served up from a fish and chip van,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Only 15 per cent could identify the battered cod,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the others confusing it with haddock, hake,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and pollock.
And when quizzed which fish they preferred,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the majority of the public answered hake.
Dr Mariani said the results suggested that many chip shops could switch to other fish without complaints,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He said: "Considering the British obsession with cod it is amazing how few people can identify the species either by sight or taste,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Ironically, most people seemed to prefer the hake which is caught in British waters but generally exported to Spain or France.
"On the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most of the cod we eat is caught off Scandinavian coastlines."
"Education into fish can help us manage our stocks better. If people know that they will enjoy a greater variety of types,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then it will help to prevent over-reliance on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and overfishing of,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a small number of species."
Diners were also shown raw,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whole fish - including bass, gurnard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], haddock and trout - but only a tiny handful recognised the species.
Cod stocks in the North Sea were recently reported to have improved,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however tight restriction remain on what EU fishing vessels may catch.
I have never seen a chippy that openly sells any type of fish other than Cod,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Haddock or Plaice. There are some that just advertise that they sell but don specify which type, maybe these stock Pollock or Hake or possibly something different still?
Chippies are generally small independently owned businesses and buying in a load of Hake is simply too big of a risk for them if they can sell it. Why take the risk when they can go for the safe Cod, Haddock or Plaice option? How many customers go to a chippy with the intention of trying something new? My guess is hardly any, maybe a few foreigners who have never been before.
