Granite Hills High School in El Cajon and Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista will host the events,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which include food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], music,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 24-hour relay,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a survivors lap and a candlelight ceremony.
Teams of walkers and runners lap the athletic field in 60-minute increments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Teams are sponsored by businesses or receive pledges from individuals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Volunteer committees have been hosting relays around San Diego County for about a decade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Mary Wendt of the American Cancer Society. Today marks El Cajon third annual relay and Chula Vista eighth.
Organizers expect 400 participants to lace up their sneakers at each relay. Both sites have already signed up 75 cancer survivors each,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"When you see all those survivors out there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you realize what strides we are making toward combating cancer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Vildibill said.
The El Cajon committee goal is to raise $30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 this year, up from $15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 last year. The Chula Vista relay pulled in $68,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 last year. This year target is $75,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000.
But educating and engaging the community is more important than a dollar figure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Vildibill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who lives in El Cajon. The relays allow people who are battling the disease to see they are not alone. She knows firsthand that outreach is a key to survival.
"There was nothing that could equal what I got from a survivor who had walked the walk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
Proceeds from the relay benefit American Cancer Society programs such as Reach to Recovery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Road to Recovery and Look Good . Feel Better. The programs provide companionship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], transportation and lifestyle help for people with cancer and their families.
These resources helped Vildibill grow from being unable to say "cancer" for two weeks after her first diagnosis to becoming president of her American Cancer Society speakers bureau,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where she told her story to hundreds of women at a time.
After two mastectomies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], radiation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chemotherapy and stem cell treatment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vildibill survived for a reason, she said.
Sure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she had more years to go square dancing with Al,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her husband of 46 years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and play with their 10 grandchildren. But she said she believes there is another reason for her survival to spread awareness and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], above all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hope.
