S&P records biggest weekly loss in 7 weeks as U.S. stock indexes fall
NEW YORK, Aug. 9 () -- The Standard & Poor's 500 index recorded its biggest weekly loss in seven weeks as U.S. stock indexes fell Friday after rising only one day this week.The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 72.81 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 15,425.51.The loss was on top of 187 points the Dow lost Monday through Wednesday before gaining 28 points Thursday. The overall 1.5 percent loss for the week ended six straight weeks of advances.The S&P -- which rallied 19 percent so far this year and closed at a record 1,709.67 Aug. 2 -- shed 6.06 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 1,691.42. The loss ate up Thursday's gain.The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index slipped 9.02 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 3,660.11.Volume was roughly 5.3 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
