The NFL Players Association has the entire union's best interests at heart when it files a grievance against a team. But it has shown interesting and somewhat questionable timing with its latest motion.

The NFLPA is seeking to collect $82,Billiga Nike Free,000 in workout bonuses from the New England Patriots on behalf of Aaron Hernandez. the news late Monday.

The Patriots released the tight end on June 26 after Hernandez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of friend Odin Lloyd. Before that date, Hernandez participated in offseason team activities while recovering from shoulder surgery. Although that qualifies him for the bonus money,Billiga Nike Shox, a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy would allow the Patriots to not pay him for the workouts. Hernandez was indicted on murder and weapons charges last week; his trial is expected to begin next year.
Hernandez also would be unable to collect the bonus if he defaulted on the language in the five-year, $40 million contract he signed in August 2012. So far, per ESPN,Billiga Air Max, he's earned $9.79 million combined from his signing bonus and base salaries,Air Max, most of it from the $12.5 million he was guaranteed.
In the light of Hernandez being charged in Lloyd's slaying, it may seem as though the NFLPA is taking a public-relations misstep in fighting to get an alleged murderer his money. In reality,Nike Shox, the union is just doing its job to help protect the rights of other players and is set up for a long,Nike Free, strong battle against the Patriots.
Also on Tuesday, a judge in Bristol County (Mass.) scheduled Hernandez's arraignment date for 2 p.m. ET on Sept. 6.
