research Walk Two Moons
œDon`t judge a man until you`ve walked two moons in his moccasins, is Sharon Creech`s main notion in her multiple award-winning book œWalk two moons, published in 1996. The novel takes 13 year-old Salamanca across the United States in her quest to find her mother. Although the book is basically labeled as Young Adult Literature, it turns out to be more than a mere children™s story.
The story follows thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, called Sal, on her road trip together with her grandparents Gram and Gramps. They decide to go to Idaho because Sal wants to find her mother, who has left for Lewiston in order to find herself. Along the way, they stop at all the sites her mother visited on her journey that include the Badlands, roger vivier discount for Discount Roger Vivier Shoes Roger Vivier Flats Roger Vivier Sale, the Black Hills and Old Faithful, so that Sal can relive some moments of her mother™s journey. Along the way Sal tells the story, cheap soccer cleats online, to pass the time,http://duveticadeutschlandshop.halod.com/, about her friend named Phoebe Winterbottom, whom she met when her father and Sal moved to Euclid, Ohio because her father thought they could start a new life there after Sal™s mother left. Phoebe is lovely girl who has a vivid imagination. One reason why they become best friends is that they share the same fate: Phoebe™s mother, Mrs. Winterbottom, also unexpectedly leaves her family. As a result, Sal finds herself amidst a tragic family affair which opens her eyes. She is then for the first time willing to talk to her father and also Mrs. Cadaver and thus discover what really happened to her mother.
Walk two Moons is a book predestined for success. The adorable characters, the fantastic style of Sharon Creech and certainly the gripping story make this book first-rate. The reader cannot put it down as it is so brilliantly written. At first, the story seems to be written for teenagers and thus deals with a œteenage problem, however, it soon turns out that it is more than just Young Adult Literature. It deals with ordinary problems, such as friendship, discount 2013 Woolrich Woolrich Jackets Woolrich® The Original Outdoor, culture, family and death values which are important to all of us,Woolrich Herren outlet deutschland, no matter of age or culture.
It seems that Sal is the only narrator in the story on the surface but when analyzing it more closely, we see that it is actually a collection of individual stories told from a number of different characters which are all intertwined. We do not only read Sal and Phoebe™s story but also hear about Gram and Gramps™ lives and get pieces of students™ journals. Furthermore, the reader also hears about Greek myths (Pandora ™s Box) and Native American Myths as this is Sal and her mother™s cultural background and probably the most obvious cultural issue in this novel. Sal and her mother are of Seneca Native American ancestry, which is mentioned numerous times in the book. For example:
œGram and I poked our noses into an old fort, and then sat on the grass watching a group of Native Americans dance and beat drums. My mother had not liked the term Native Americans. She thought it sounded primitive and stiff. She said, œMy great grandfather was a Seneca Indian, and I am proud of it. She wasn™t a Seneca Native American. (Creech: 1994: 56-57)
Another good example is found on page nr. 73 where Sal starts talking to a Native American:
œWe went to the Pipestone National Monument and saw Indians thunking away at the stone in the quarry. I asked one if he was a Native American, but he said, œNo. I am a person. I said, œBut are you a Native American person? He said, œNo, I™m an American Indian person. I said, œSo am I. In my blood. (Creech 1994:73)
Furthermore, she talks about her mother and the Indian stories she told:
œMy mother especially liked Indian stories. She knew about thunder gods, earth-makers,Discount Roger Vivier Shoes, wise crows, sly coyotes, and shadow souls. Her favorite stories were those about people who came back, after death, as a bird or a river or a horse. She even knew one story about an old warrior who came back as a potato. œ (Creech 1994: 117)
Salamanca™s background of Seneca Native American descent is constantly mentioned throughout the book and is therefore rather obvious for the reader.
Another cross-cultural issue which is not as obvious and requires the reader to read between the lines is the contrast between rural and urban America. When Sal and her father move from Bybanks to Euclid, Salamanca also moves from a more rural culture to a more urban one.
œI™m a country girl at heart,http://rogervivieroutlets.webmium.com/, and that is true, she observes.
Indeed, Bybanks is a small village, as she describes it, it is œnot much more than a caboodle of houses roosting in a green spot alongside the Ohio river. After the move,Duvetica Jackets UK Outlet, Sal suddenly finds herself in the town of Euclid, which is much larger than her former town Bybanks,Duvetica Jacken Duvetica daunenjacke Sale Duvetica Deutschland Duvetica München Shop herren, with a population of approximately 50,http://discountmerrellshoes.webmium.com/,000 people and thus also the lifestyle of the citizens is different from what Salamanca is used to. For example, the girls in Sal™s new school are afraid of insects,Duvetica daunenjacke Sale, such as spiders, whereas Sal has absolutely no problems touching them, which in the eyes of her classmates makes her a little heroine. Secondly, Salamanca looks rather different to the other girls. She has long, black, smooth hair (which also hints at her Indian origin), whereas the other girls wear their hair short. Also, their way of dressing is rather different to Sal™s, they seem to pay much more attention to their looks than Salamanca does. Finally, life in general is different; people do different things " Sal used to spend her time outside, swimming or horse-back riding or generally being in nature which is now no longer possible. œNature is very important to Sal as many pictures in regard to nature are associated with her mother. Sal constantly remembers her mother hugging and kissing trees and also the blackberry image is somehow another hint at nature, which in turn shows the importance of nature to œIndians in general.
When reading the book the reader quickly notices that the story of Phoebe intertwines with Sal. She uses Phoebe™s story about the mysterious disappearance of her mother and the lunatic to somehow turn away the attention from her own tragic experience with her mother. Furthermore, the story of Gram and Gramps, which is also told in the novel from time to time, gives young Salamanca a sense of understanding for her own family history. Thus, all the individual stories in the book offer the characters and also the reader a means of understanding the origins of the protagonists and their values " another cross-cultural issue.
Although so many different issues are treated in this novel by Sharon Chreech, I believe that the message œNever judge a man until you have walked in his moccasins is the author™s main intention behind this novel. Sal takes this advice to heart throughout the book and continuously tries to step into the shoes of other characters. For example, by putting herself into Mrs. Winterbottom™s shoes, cheap soccer shoes, Sal thinks about her own mother, how she may have felt at certain moments. Furthermore, when Phoebe starts getting mad by thinking about all the terrible things which could have happen to her mother,http://woolrichjacket.webmium.com/, Sal gets angry with her, she asks herself if her father feels the same way toward her at times. Putting herself into someone else™s moccasins allows Sal to treat other people with greater kindness and understanding and makes her understand her own behavior in the past.
To my mind, Sharon Creech wants the reader to keep in mind the above mentioned message: Never judge someone because of a different color, because somebody belongs to a different culture or has different values than you. It does not matter, only the situation (context) and deeds of people are important. Talk to them before making any judgments, as Sal, for example, does when refusing to talk to Mrs. Cadaver for a very long time. Sharon Creech™s intention in this novel is to teach young adults that diversity is a good thing and nothing to fear. People should be open-minded towards other cultures and see differences as positive. Through Salamanca and her view to see things, we learn greater kindness and a better understanding towards fellow citizen.
I strongly recommend the use of this book in classes of AHS and BHS schools. It is not only fantastic to read it, it also gives insights into the mind of a lovely teenage girl with various problems; some of which some pupils may even identify with. Sharon Creech impeccably manages to produce a wonderful book which will not only enthrall pupils but teachers as well. The story is more than just a Young Adult Literature as the themes treated in this novel can be applied generally. It is, on the hand, meant to show that we all need to have more tolerance towards fellow citizens and also should try, at least sometimes, to step into the shoes of others and thus try to get a sense of how the other person may feel in certain situations. On the other hand, it also shows the importance of different cultural backgrounds not only for our society but also for an individual person. Salamanca™s Indian background helps the reader understand why and which values are important to her and the way she acts also displays her understanding of the world. I can only congratulate Sharon Creech for writing such a gripping story which will,Woolrich Deutschland Woolrich Arctic Jacket Woolrich Damen Woolrich Herren outlet deutschland, I am sure, set everyone thinking, especially pupils from AHS and BHS schools.
