She is a stylist for American Vogue and also styles runway shows for such powerhouse designers as Marchesa in New York and Dolce Gabbana in Milan. She lives in a fabulous five-storey townhouse in Chelsea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is the mother of two young boys and is married to renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean.
Adding to her busy resume, she also designs a luxury collection of whimsical girly shoes with such details as hand-embroidered silk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which comes from an English company that makes silk for the Queen's coronation coaches.
Is it any wonder then that when she arrived at Holt Renfrew this week - her first Toronto visit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], here for an informal meet-and-greet with the local fashion press and shoe department staff - all the women were having girl crushes on the lovely British born designer?
We sat down to chat with Simmons about her career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has walked many paths.
Q: You've tried your hands at many things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including studying film set design, modeling and styling. Why did you want to design shoes?
A: When I was 14, I worked on Saturdays in a shoe store so I think I've always been passionate about shoes. When I started working with designers - for example Calvin Klein - I would see how the shoes were being made, from choosing the leather, the sketch and literally finally holding it in your hands. I was wowed by the many stages for such a small thing that goes on your foot. I love the process of it.
Q: As a stylist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], were you not interested in designing clothes?
A: When I think of clothes you have so many possibilities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with a shoe it goes on your foot and you only have that area to work with. With clothing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you have tailoring and pants and silhouettes - it's a huge undertaking.
Q: What do you think a woman today wants from a pair of shoes?
A: She wants a number of things. She wants something feminine, comfortable, fashionable and at the same time functional. Because women lead quite busy lives - working mothers with careers - they need a functional shoe that also looks good.
Q: A lot of famous shoe designers are men and one of the criticisms aimed their way is they don't have to wear the shoes, so comfort never seems to be factor in their design process. What do you bring as a female designer of shoes?
A: I try to test them everyday and walk and function in them. I have to take my kids to school in the mornings and then I go to work and stand on a photography set for long hours and rush home to help the kids with homework. Maybe I'll kick them off and stick them back on to go to a fashion function at night. As a woman designer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you're aware of the function,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not just looking like a million dollars.
Q: Footwear styles are often a reflection of the times. What is your designs saying about society today?
A: Women are doing so many other things today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I feel like my shoes create a lifestyle - it's more than just strictly fashion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I want my shoes to be timeless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I come from an editorial point of view so I wanted to give something that says it's okay to wear that in three years' time.
Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: Probably 400 pairs, mostly in storage. At home I have a very edited wardrobe because I think if you have too many things at home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it gets very confusing and you don't know what you have and you end up just wearing jeans and T-shirts because you can't face going into your wardrobe.相关的主题文章：
