How Snow White became the wicked witch
----------Early on the morning of July 17, a Los Angeles paparazzo was given what seemed like a routine assignment: to follow Kristen Stewart, the 22-year-old star of the Twilight movies and girlfriend of British actor Robert Pattinson. If the past was anything to go by, the photographer's pickings were likely to be slim: the young American actress is understandably camera-shy. In the last four years Stewart has become a huge star after the extraordinary box-office success of the four Twilight vampire movies, in which she plays the pallid heroine, Bella Swan. The Twilight movies have taken more than $2.4 billion. Breaking Dawn - Part 2, the fifth and last, based on the young adult novels by Stephenie Meyer, will be released in November. Yet the startling pictures the photographer took of Stewart later that day stunned her millions of fans and sent Hollywood into paroxysms of soul-searching.
As Bella, and as the girlfriend of heart-throb Pattinson, 26, who plays Edward Cullen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her dangerous, vampiric love interest in the Twilight series,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Stewart has become an idol to teenage girls all over the world. In tabloid parlance, she is K-Stew to Pattinson's R-Patz; together they are "Robsten", Hollywood's most golden young couple. Despite her youth, Stewart's stardom has made her the highest-paid actress in Hollywood: she earned $34.5 million in the past year, according to Forbes magazine. Her most recent film,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Snow White and the Huntsman, has already taken $385 million worldwide since it opened at the end of May. Her next movie will be the independent On the Road, based on the cult 1957 Beat novel by Jack Kerouac."She's got to a great place," says Laura Bickford,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the producer of the Oscar-winning film Traffic. "She has credibility as a really good actress from early in her career, from films like Into the Wild, which Sean Penn directed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in edgy, indie films like The Runaways and now On the Road. At the same time she has her big franchise, Twilight. And Snow White and the Huntsman has just shown that she has a life beyond Twilight in another big studio franchise."Yet there has been unease about the actress's relationship with her celebrity. "She's had trillion-watt bulbs flashing at her from a young age," says Rebecca Yeldham, the producer of On the Road. Yeldham first met Stewart in 2007, when she was 17,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before Twilight hysteria erupted. Yeldham was talking to the then unknown actress about acting in the film of the Kerouac book. "But I was always struck by her maturity, how grounded she was in the face of all that."Despite the omnipresent lenses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], during the more than three years they were believed to have been dating, Stewart and Pattinson had hardly ever been photographed together outside carefully staged press events; in interviews they refused to discuss their relationship, or even admit they had one. He was surprised when she instead drove across town to an empty car park in west Los Angeles, about 20km away. The paparazzo saw a tall man in dark jeans and a dark jacket getting into her car and he and Stewart start "making out". He followed as the couple meandered back east in Stewart's Mini Cooper, until she stopped beside a small road in the Hollywood Hills. Stewart had been kissing Rupert Sanders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the director of Snow White and the Huntsman. "A heartbreaking discovery for Rob as Kristen's steamy affair with a married man is caught on camera." According to the story: "Like a pair of hormone-addled teenagers, the actress and the dad of two . Ironically, given the lengths she has gone to hide it, this seemed to offer the first public disclosure of how she really felt about Pattinson. "This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the person I love and respect the most: Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."Sanders issued his own public apology to his wife and children. Ross, who had played Stewart's mother in Snow White and the Huntsman, was believed to have uploaded a picture to her Instagram photo account of Snow White crying and drinking, with the caption, "Not so pretty or so pure after all . "If it's true that Kristen Stewart has cheated on Robert Pattinson, I will personally kill her . " one tweeted. Apart from the personal, there were huge career and business issues at stake. How would the scandal affect box-office prospects for Breaking Dawn - Part 2, expected to be the biggest film in the franchise? Would anguished fans stay away? What effect the scandal would have on Stewart's career, which had been expected to blossom as the Twilight series ended. When reports suggested that Stewart might be dropped from the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, while Sanders might still get to direct it, many were incensed by what seemed like typical Hollywood sexism. "We had emails from fans outraged that she would not be included," says Kim Masters of the trade paper The Hollywood Reporter. Masters says that although the studio publicly insists no decision has been made, she's been told that Stewart will not be brought back for any sequel."You can only wonder why the studio would have made that call,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Yeldham. "Kristen is the one who drove the box office on that film, not the director."Even if the studio overlooks what Sanders did, others in Hollywood are less forgiving. They note that Snow White is the first film with which Sanders - who built his reputation directing commercials - has been entrusted. "He thinks he's entitled to have an affair with the Hollywood princess when the studio has given him this shot, when she is carrying two franchises,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he's married?" says one executive. "No, you're not! It's up there with John Edwards' and Bill Clinton's stupidity. Go have an affair with anybody but her. Nobody cares if you cheat on your wife. People in Hollywood just care about the business. He's obviously very talented,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but something like this is not just personal - it has business implications."Outside Hollywood, people are stunned that Sanders would have cheated on someone as beautiful, accomplished, cool and loyal as Ross, the 33-year-old Briton who is one of the muses of the modern fashion and art world. Ross's friends and family were even more shocked by Sanders's betrayal because she had put her own career on hold so they could have children, and because her ambitious husband had wanted to move to Hollywood to become a film director. Just before the scandal broke, Ross admitted that she had found the move to LA five years ago, to support Sanders, who was away for long stretches of time shooting commercials and then his movie, very difficult. "I went from working with Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano to living on an isolated hilltop, with my husband gone most of the time. I would never say out loud that I am raising my children alone, but a lot of the time it's felt like that."Sanders is an enigma even to those who know him well. Some of Ross's closest friends had felt uncomfortable with him, and believe he would never have had as much success without her. He gained access to the bohemian, aristocratic world from which she hails: her father, Ian Ross,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was a co-founder of the pirate station Radio Caroline. Her maternal grandmother is the 102-year-old dowager Lady Killearn, whose late husband was ambassador to Cairo during World War II. She had grown up in LA, and both her parents and one of her brothers work in the film industry. Jules,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her mother, who is Australian by birth, is a well-known script supervisor, tough, no-nonsense - she has a tattoo down her right arm - but maternal. She has just directed her first feature, about a prison unit where homosexuals and transsexuals are housed. Even today she has a uniform of tight black jeans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rock-band T-shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Converse sneakers and a backwards baseball cap. But it was the 2007 film Into the Wild,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in which she had a small but memorable part as a young singer, that really got her noticed. At the end of that year, Stewart was announced as Bella Swan in the first of the Twilight movies. Stewart won the part after an informal audition with Pattinson, whom she had never met, in the home of Catherine Hardwicke, the film's director. Hardwicke was shocked by the immediate sexual chemistry between the two stars as they played out an intimate scene in her bedroom. "I was nervous," Hardwicke later said. "I saw they were so attracted and Kristen was under-age . I felt I was in the presence of something strong and powerful."Even before Twilight was released, Stewart and Pattinson were mobbed by so-called Twihards. The actress wasn't prepared for it. "I would have been very happy just working from job to job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], paying my rent one movie at a time," she said. "I never wanted to be this famous. I never imagined this life for myself."What seemed hard was how to combine the artifice and pretension she needed as an actor and celebrity with the importance of personal "integrity" that her mother had drummed into her. This conundrum made her painfully self-conscious, especially in interviews, where she would come across as brooding, awkward, fidgety. "I'm still a very intense person," she told one interviewer. "I'm overtly aware of f . ing everything. Just obsessive, analytical."In the past few months, people around Stewart had sensed a greater ease about her, an acceptance of the privileged place she had earned in Hollywood. She was said to be looking forward to life beyond the Twilight series and is proud of On the Road,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], directed by Walter Salles. After the intense but adolescent romances of Twilight and Snow White, playing Marylou in On the Road can only be read as a definitive statement of her coming of age, as an actress and as a woman. "I can't imagine that audiences are going to stay away from the finale of Twilight because of this," says Bickford. "Of course they're going to go. Maybe some heartbroken girls will be throwing things at the screen, but they're all still going to go."Unless she and Pattinson get back together - and the rumours they are attempting a reconciliation are already starting - they will have to do press separately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and stand together for the photo call. "I can see the headlines: 'The first time together!' People will keep milking the drama until the franchise ends," Bickford adds. "I agree with what Jodie Foster said, that fortunately this will all blow over."The scandal may affect Stewart's career, though. Soon after it broke, she pulled out of a small independent film she had been linked with - Cali, a dramatic family thriller. "Even before this, she lived a life under siege from the paparazzi," she says. "She is very loath to go out when she's in Los Angeles. She's a homebody: she likes to cook, she likes to be with her friends. It's terrible what this media world has done to her. It's awful and my heart goes out to her because she is a very good person. Perhaps, like Jodie Foster, who is believed to be advising her, and Natalie Portman, she will slip off the Hollywood shackles for a few years and go to university. By the time she comes back, no doubt the trillion-watt flashbulbs will be fixed on the scandalous travails of another young starlet.© The Sunday Times.
